Hellenistic Spindle-form Unguentarium with white background

Hellenistic Spindle-form Unguentarium, 330–63 B.C.

£150.00

A rare and intact spindle-form unguentarium — a slender terracotta vessel used throughout the Hellenistic world to hold perfumed oils, cosmetics, and unguents. Characterised by its elegant elongated form, everted rim, and tapering base, this piece is a fine example of everyday luxury from the ancient Greek world.

Dating to the Hellenistic period (330–63 B.C.), unguentaria of this type were produced across the Eastern Mediterranean and are frequently found in domestic and funerary contexts, reflecting the importance of perfumed oils in both daily life and ritual. The surface retains its original earthen patina with traces of mineral encrustation.

There is a break near the bottom, as shown in photos and this has been repaired.

Presented and housed in a bespoke plastic display case.
